Leadership and position
There are two types of leadership positions, leadership that is derived from the position of power and leadership that stems from personal power. Often these traits are combined when you locate a team leader with both you have a winner. However, when building a highly profitable law firm that is not the only winning ingredient to your team. The team leader that has the ability to recognize individuals on the team with the leadership skills derived from a position of personal power and allows these folks to lead is a wise leader.
Individuals with the capacity to influence other members of the law team with personal power are exceptional ingredients to a winning team. The only down side to these key players is an overbearing or micromanaging positional leader that dis-empowers these diamonds in the rough. Many times administrative or paralegal personnel take on this role exuberantly. A successful team leader allows this, encourages this and enables this type of leadership within the team. It is the insecure leader that discourages this type of teamwork.
Leaders that have built highly profitable law firms recognize that internal leadership spurns growth. Positional power thrust on a team deters profitability and ultimately will destroy a department or spread negativity throughout the firm. Encourage leaders and discourage positional power!
