The Weight of Your Business Card—Not the Place to Cut Corners

Everything in business starts with that all-important first impression. After you shake hands with a prospective client, what’s the next thing that happens? You hand out your business card.

Think about what a cheaply-made and inferior business card says about you. A poorly printed card made of flimsy paper stock screams “cheap!” and “undependable!” It suggests to the client that if you’re willing to skimp on your calling card, what corners will you cut when providing services to me?

Thicker is Better

The best thickness for a business card can be a subjective choice. Most of us know don’t know what the proper thickness should be, but the second we touch a business card, we register something about its texture. It just happens automatically.

Up until recently, the standard industry weight for a professional card was 80 lb. stock. More recently, weights are trending towards 120 and 130 lbs. It’s become a matter of what we are now accustomed to handling.

Is there much of a cost-difference between 80 lb. stock and the higher weights? Not really, certainly nothing significant. And we believe its well worth the additional minor expense.

A few other design tips to keep in mind:

Give your card some color, but no more than 3-4 colors at most. As much as possible, use the same colors as you firm’s logo. Make sure the design of your card is consistent with your firm’s other printed materials (stationary, letterhead, website, etc.) Remember—your business card is a vital part of your overall brand.

Wells & Drew offers a wide range of business card options and imaging techniques to meet your budget and design choices. We want your first impression to be your best impression!
