Popular Internet File-Sharing Service to Shut Down by December 31

12/8/2010

One of the world’s largest file sharing network will be shutting down by the end of 2010. Limewire, whose platform allowed people around the globe to share music and movies over the internet for free, said that it would also be closing its sole office in New York by that time.

Two months ago, the popular file-sharing service has been found liable by a U.S. federal court for copyright infringement. The judge handling the case ruled in favor of the appeal of the music industry to shut down Limewire.

Limewire, in a press statement that was released on Friday said, “As a result of our current legal situation, we have no choice but to wind down LimeWire Store operations.”

The company also stated that, “Despite our dedication and efforts, December 31, 2010, will mark the day when LimeWire Store shuts its virtual doors.”

The press statement also revealed that the plans of Limewire to bring a separate and legal music service to the market had been cancelled.

In 2000, Limewire was founded by Mark Gorton. It rapidly became popular among millions of Internet users, who used the platform to download music for free.

Limewire had been considered by the music industry as a thorn in their sides, which culminated in the industry’s filing of a suit against the company for copyright infringement.

The industry has been repeatedly pointing out to Internet file-sharing services, like Limewire, as the culprit behind their declining music sales.
