Demand for Secure Online Document Solutions to Increase – the Legal Industry

11/11/2010

The wave of attack from hackers have prompted the legal industry to implement more secure methods in protecting their communication systems that involve sending important and private documents to clients and within their respective organizations. It was only two weeks ago that the email database of ASC Law firm in UK was hacked. At current time, there are still no laws that require for such a system to exist, one can expect a law similar to that of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act to surface as an answer to this problem in online document security.

One Texas-based provider for e-solutions to the legal industry, DataCert Inc., created Passport, which is a software package that allows secure communication for legal firms on both internal and external aspects. The system shall provide better and customizable communication solutions among large firms where it can be integrated into the email client and faxing systems. It could also be integrated into other electronic tools that form part of the company’s communication systems. In fact, Passport was adopted by Carillion, which is a system support company in UK. Richard Tapp, Carillion’s general counsel said that, “The system offers unparalleled flexibility and features such as Outlook integration, making the management and sharing of information, internally and with outside counsel, easier and more efficient.”

For law firms that are smaller, the issue is more manageable compared to those faced by larger firms. The answer is a low cost method which can be availed from a legal web design service. Smaller law firms can purchase Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates for their emails. These would only cost between $50 – $100 and an additional monthly hosting fee which is not considered as expensive as well. The 128-bit encryption used on emails with SSLs provides better protection than the regular email providers.
