Law School Ranking Methodology to be changed by US News in the Wake of ABA Action

The law school ranking methodology being used by the U.S. News and World Report will most likely be changed to reflect the new and more accurate job placement information which the law school accrediting arm of ABA has conditionally agreed to start collecting.

If more a thorough information becomes available with regards to the types and status of legal jobs, it will be collected and published by U.S. News, as well as factor it, where applicable, to its annual Best Law School rankings. This was according to what Bob Morse, director of data research of the magazine, wrote in Morse Code.

Morse said that as soon as the information becomes available, the magazine will use its own statistical surveys for this fall to collect and ultimately, publish a comprehensive set of more detailed jobs and employment data from each law school for graduates of last year.

He said, “When we gather this richer data set, we will be able to make a more exact determination of how our ranking methodology will change.”

The council of ABA’s Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar this month conditionally gave its nod to changes in its law school questionnaire requiring law schools to submit a more comprehensive post-graduate employment information.

The changes are centered on a formal agreement with the National Association for Law Placement, which gathers the information, to turn over the data to the ABA.
